2014 CSAS Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is the premiere performing ensemble in the band program at CSAS, and was formed in 1996 by its present conductor, David Butler. Under his direction the CSAS Symphonic Band has received superior ratings at East Tennessee School Band & Orchestra Association Concert Festivals, and at both Dixie Classic Festivals and National Adjudicators Invitational Festivals. In recent years, the Symphonic Band was named the Honor Group for the 2006 Atlanta Dixie Classic, the 2007 Richmond Dixie Classic, the 2010 Chicago Dixie Classic, the 2011 Atlanta Dixie Classic, and the 2012 Richmond Dixie Classic.  The Symphonic Band was invited to perform at the 2014 Grand National Adjudicators Invitational Festival, and received a Superior rating as well as awards for outstanding woodwinds and outstanding soloist. The Symphonic Band has also performed by invitation at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, the National Magnet School Conference, and the Tennessee State Concert Festival, an invitation-only festival for superior ensembles in the state of Tennessee. In addition, the Music Department of CSAS was recognized in 2000 as a Grammy Signature School.

The Symphonic Band performs anywhere from seven to ten or more concerts every year. In addition to regular concerts at school in the Creed Bates Auditorium, the Symphonic Band annually performs a guest concert at its sister school, Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts, in the fall. They have performed authentic Sousa-style concerts, welcomed many guest artists and conductors to their stage, and held joint concerts with community bands and other school ensembles both locally and across the country. The Symphonic Band has also been invited to share the stage with collegiate band programs in guest performances on the campuses of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Tennessee Technological University, Mercer University, and Belmont University, as well as performing for Chattanooga community events and leaders, including school superintendents, mayors, congressmen, and senators.

To date, the CSAS Symphonic Band has recorded three compact disc recordings on the Mark Records label, the latest released in Fall 2010, as well as other recording sessions in RCA's historic Studio B and Jack White's Third Man Records.  CSAS Symphonic Band students continue to consistently represent their school in the Chattanooga Symphony Youth Orchestras, the East Tennessee Youth Wind Ensemble, the Tennessee All State-East Bands and Jazz Bands, the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts,  and the Tennessee All State Band, Jazz Band and Orchestra every year. Alumni of the band program represent CSAS in the music departments of colleges and universities across the nation, and many have gone on to become professional musicians and music educators.
