David Butler is the Director of Bands at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences, a position he has held since 1994.  Previous to his appointment at CSAS he served as assistant band director at Hixson High School and band director at Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts. Under his direction the bands at CSAS have consistently received superior ratings and recognition at state and national levels, including recognition as a Dixie Classic Festival Honor Band in 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, and 2012. In addition, the CSAS Symphonic Band has also performed by invitation at the 2014 Grand National Adjudicators Invitational Concert Festival, the Tennessee State Concert Festival, and on the campuses of Tennessee Tech University, Belmont University, Mercer University, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In addition to his duties at CSAS, Mr. Butler also serves as the lead instrumental teacher for the Hamilton County Schools, and is responsible for the coordination of all inservice activities.

A native of Chattanooga, Mr. Butler received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Tennessee Technological University, where he studied tuba with R. Winston Morris. He is currently an active performer in the Chattanooga area, and has performed with the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera, Chattanooga Brass Quintet, Jericho Brass, Chattanooga Concert Band, and the Southern Star Symphonic Brass Band. He is also an arranger of music for the tuba and for concert band.  His works have been performed by groups at all levels, recorded by several prominent collegiate and professional ensembles, and are published by TUBA Press and TRN Music. Mr. Butler is a six time recipient of selection by Who’s Who Among America’s High School Teachers, and has been recognized as an outstanding teacher by the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts multiple times.  Mr. Butler is a member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association, National Association for Music Education, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, National Band Association, Tennessee Music Educators Association, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, and the East Tennessee School Band & Orchestra Association. He is also an elected member of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity as well as the American School Band Directors Association. Mr. Butler has served on the Executive Board of the ETSBOA for ten years as Band Chair and President of the Association, as Conference Equipment Chair for TMEA, and was recently elected to the ASBDA National Executive Board as the Region V National Chair. He has guest conducted both concert band and jazz band clinics for the ETSBOA, served as the Senior Band conductor for the Carson Newman Summer Music Camp and the Festival Concert Band conductor for the Tennessee Tech Festival of Winds & Percussion. He has served as an adjudicator for the KMEA State Marching Band Championships for over a decade,  as well as numerous marching and concert festivals in Tennessee. and Alabama. He has given professional clinics for the Hamilton County Instrumental Music Inservice, the Tennessee Music Education Association, and the American School Band Directors Association, and continues to serve as an active adjudicator and clinician throughout the Southeast for both band and the tuba.
