About Sue Neelands

Education: I jokingly say that I’m the poster child for late-bloomers! The Class of 1978 at Woodbridge Senior High School had 1,200 members, and I was in the bottom third! I did not consider myself a very good student, and I dropped out of college in my first semester. Much later, I went back to school at the same time my children did. Little by little, it dawned on me that I had become one of the smart kids! I earned my associate's in Arts and Sciences from Germanna Community College and graduated Summa Cum Laude, on the President’s List, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa!

Why are you at CSAS? CSAS was not my first choice, but I was told I’d be crazy not to jump at the chance to work here when the job was offered to me. I have since found a home, because they were right! I would have been crazy to miss the chance to work at one of the best magnet schools in the country!

Family: My husband, Ted, and I celebrated our 30th anniversary in January. Our son, Joshua, is a website designer, and our daughter Kaylee is a freelance writer. She and her husband, Casey, gave me the greatest gift ever – two wonderful grandsons, Nicholas and Lucas. We also have two Jack Russell Terriers named Scallywags and Spike.

Hobbies: I love to plan parties, cook, and entertain. Every week we host at least a dozen people for lunch after church. Just call before you come so I can set a place at the table.

Favorite sports team: Washington Redskins – "Hail to the Redskins, Hail Victory! Braves on the warpath! Fight for old D.C." (my hometown)

Favorite book: Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey because it was read to me over and over again when I was a little girl, and it reminds me of being well-loved!

Favorite quote: “Remember what it feels like to be a child.” Steve Ball, educator

Favorite subject when you were a student – English – especially creative writing. Also, I was in the drama club and lettered in drama!
